Preventing Poisoning in the Home

According to the Poison Prevention Week Council, more than two million poisonings are reported each year and more than 90 percent of these poisonings happen at home. Many common household products are poisonous, and it is important to keep these substances in safe places. Expired medicine or medicine taken improperly can also lead to poisoning. By reviewing these safety tips, you can help prevent the poisoning of yourself or a loved one.

How to prevent poisoning:

  • Read the labels on all of your household chemical products, and follow the instructions carefully.
  • Store household chemicals in a locked cabinet or shed.
  • Never leave chemicals unattended while in use, and make sure to close all chemical containers if interrupted by a phone call, doorbell, etc.
  • Leave the original labels on all chemical products, and keep products in their original containers.
  • Follow the directions on all medicines before taking them.
  • Keep medicines in their original containers.
  • Routinely clean your medicine cabinet, and make sure to properly dispose of any expired or unused medication.

If a poisoning occurs:

  • Do not panic, remain calm.
  • If the victim has collapsed or is not breathing, dial 911 immediately.
  • If the victim is awake and alert:
  • Give the victim a small amount of water.

Dial the Poison Control Hotline at 1-800-222-1222 with the following information, if known.

  • The victim’s age and weight.
  • The original container of the poison.
  • The time of the poisoning.
  • The address where the victim is located.
  • DO NOT attempt to induce vomiting with Syrup of Ipecac, or by placing anything in the victim’s mouth or throat.
  • Keep the Poison Control number (1-800-222-1222) near the phone.
